Women now earn a majority of US college degrees, so a college-educated woman who wants a partner with an equal or higher level of schooling is drawing from a smaller pool than a man with the same wish. This is a recent shift. For most of the last century the college population skewed male, and the idea that a woman would look for a man at least as educated as herself fit the numbers of the day. The numbers have moved. Among younger adults, women hold degrees at a clearly higher rate than men, and that single fact changes the math of who can pair with whom by education. Census American Community Survey figures put the share of US men age 25 and older who hold a bachelor's degree or higher at roughly 37 percent. The comparable figure for women is a little higher, somewhere near 39 to 40 percent across all adult ages. On its own that looks like a narrow gap, a couple of points, easy to wave away. The full adult population hides the real story, though, because it blends older cohorts, who came up when men dominated college, with younger ones, who did not.
Split the population by age and the gap widens sharply among people in their late twenties and thirties, the heart of the dating years. Among adults roughly 25 to 34, women hold four-year degrees at a rate close to 47 percent, while men sit near 37 percent. That is a spread of about ten points in the age band where most people are actively looking for a partner. Older bands are more even, and the oldest still tilt male, which drags the all-ages average back toward parity. So the headline number of a small gap understates what a single woman in her early thirties actually faces when she scans the men her own age.
With about 128 million adult US men in the population, a ten-point difference in these age bands is not a rounding error. It means that within a given age slice, degree-holding women outnumber degree-holding men. When two groups of unequal size try to pair off inside the same pool, the larger group cannot all find a match in the smaller one. Some people in the bigger group either partner outside it or do not partner on that trait at all.
How the balance flipped
The reversal happened within living memory. In the 1960s and early 1970s, men earned the clear majority of bachelor's degrees in the United States. Women trailed at every level, and graduate and professional programs skewed male by a wide margin. A woman looking for a husband schooled to at least her own level was, on the raw numbers, asking for something the population could supply, because educated men were the more common half of the educated population.
Women reached parity in bachelor's degrees awarded around the early 1980s and kept climbing. By the 2010s they were earning well over half of all four-year degrees granted each year, along with the majority of master's and a majority of doctoral and professional degrees. Because degrees are earned young and carried for life, the annual flow slowly reshaped the standing stock. Each graduating class added more women than men to the degree-holding population, and over decades the younger age bands tipped female while the older ones, set in an earlier era, stayed male. That history matters for dating because preferences formed in one era can outlast the conditions that made them sensible. A rule of thumb that worked when degree-holding men were plentiful runs into a supply problem once the educated population tips the other way.
What educational hypergamy means
Hypergamy is the tendency to seek a partner ranked higher than oneself on some measure, and educational hypergamy applies that to schooling. It describes a preference for a partner with an equal or higher level of education. The pattern has been common among women historically, and surveys still find that many women prefer a partner at least as educated as they are, while fewer men treat a partner's degree as a firm requirement.
Here is where the supply shift bites. When educated men were the majority of the educated pool, educational hypergamy for women was easy to satisfy. Now that women hold degrees at a higher rate in the prime dating years, the same preference asks the population for something it has less of. A woman with a bachelor's degree who insists on a man with a bachelor's degree or more is filtering a group where her target is scarcer than she is. None of this says anyone should change what they want. It describes a constraint, not a verdict. The point is arithmetic: when the two sides of a preference are unequal in number, the larger side faces tighter odds, and today the larger side of the educated dating pool is women.
Attainment by gender and age band

Read down the first two columns and the trend is plain. The gap is largest where dating is most active and smallest where it is least. Why the gap forces more mixed-education couples
When one group in a pool is larger than the group it wants to match with, the pool cannot clear on that trait alone. Some matches have to cross the line. If degree-holding women outnumber degree-holding men in the same age band, then either some degree-holding women pair with men who lack a four-year degree, or they stay unpaired on that trait. There are simply not enough same-age degree-holding men for every degree-holding woman who might prefer one, so the surplus resolves through couples that mix education levels.
Two forces soften the squeeze in real life. First, people do not date only within their own birth year. Second, many people do not treat a degree as a hard cutoff at all. What a degree filter does to a dating pool
Adding an education requirement to a partner search is one of the sharper cuts you can make, and its bite depends on which side you are on.
