A nine-point checklist, backed by real pool math, to tell a selective standard from an impossible one.
Your standards are too high only if the combined pool they leave is a fraction of a percent of the people you could realistically meet, and nine simple checks can tell that apart from a list that is merely selective. High standards are not a problem on their own. The problem is holding a set of filters that, stacked together, leave almost nobody, while believing the pool is still large. These nine checks put a number on it. Each one is grounded in how much a given filter removes from the roughly 128 million adult US men, or the adult US women on the other side. None of this is a verdict on what you deserve. It is a way to see the size of the pool you are choosing, so you can decide with open eyes.

Check 1: Count your hard filters
The first check is a headcount of your dealbreakers. Not your preferences, your dealbreakers, the ones you would reject someone over even if everything else fit. One or two hard filters keeps most people in a workable pool. Three or four starts to compound fast, because each filter multiplies against the ones before it rather than adding to them.
Say you hold three filters that each keep about a third of the pool. On paper that is 33 percent times 33 percent times 33 percent, which lands near 3.6 percent before any adjustment. A useful test for each filter is the reject-in-person test. Picture someone who fits everything else you want and misses only this one item. Would you truly pass, or would you keep talking to them? Items that fail that test are preferences you have mislabeled as gates, and they belong in Check 5 rather than in your hard count.
Check 2: Is any single filter a top-5 percent ask?
Some filters are gentle and some are severe on their own. A top-5 percent filter removes 19 of every 20 people before anything else applies, so even one of them caps how large your pool can be. One top-5 percent ask is not automatically too high. It becomes a problem when you pair it with other filters and still expect a broad field. If your list contains a single top-5 percent trait, treat that trait as almost your entire budget for rarity, and keep the rest of your list loose. Check 3: Are you stacking three or more top-15 percent traits?
This is the most common way a reasonable-sounding list turns into a statistical unicorn. Each individual ask feels fair. Six feet tall is only the top 15 percent. Six figures is only the top 20 percent. An advanced degree is a low double-digit share. Any one of them alone leaves a real pool.
Stack all three and the math turns sharp. Roughly 14.5 percent times 18 percent times a low-teens share lands well under 1 percent before you account for overlap. The traits do correlate, which softens the collision a little, and Check 7 covers that. Even so, three top-15 percent traits together almost always drop the resulting pool below 1 percent. Check 4: Are your height and supply compatible?
Height is the sharpest common filter for women screening men, so it deserves its own check. Only about 14.5 percent of adult US men reach 6 feet, close to 1 in 7. A 6-foot floor alone removes around 85 percent of men. Push the floor to 6 feet 2 inches and you are down to a small single-digit share.
The question is whether your height bar leaves enough supply for your other filters to work with. If you require 6 feet and then add an income floor and a narrow age range, you are multiplying against a base that already started at 14.5 percent. A height floor near the male average of 5 feet 9 inches keeps the base wide and lets your other preferences operate. A tall floor is fine if height is your single priority, but it cannot be one of several. Check 5: Non-negotiables versus nice-to-haves
Every filter on your list is either a gate or a bonus, and mixing the two is what inflates a delusion score without you noticing. A nice-to-have that you have quietly promoted to a gate costs you the same pool as a genuine dealbreaker, even though you would happily overlook it in a real person you liked.
Go through your list and mark each item as a true non-negotiable or a nice-to-have. Most people find that only two or three items survive as real gates. The rest are preferences that would bend for the right person. Check 6: Does your income floor collide with your age window?
Filters do not sit in isolation, and income and age pull against each other in a way that quietly shrinks the overlap. Earnings rise with age, so a six-figure income floor skews your qualifying pool older. About 18 percent of US men earn 100,000 dollars or more, but that share is much lower among men in their twenties and higher among men in their forties.
Set a 100,000 dollar floor and a 26 to 32 age window together and you are asking for a high earner in the exact years when few men have reached that income yet. The two filters collide, and the overlap can be far smaller than either number suggests on its own. Check 7: Are you double-counting correlated traits?
This check can work in your favor, which is why it matters. Traits like height, income, and education are not independent. Taller men earn somewhat more on average, and higher earners are more likely to hold degrees. Multiplying raw frequencies as if the traits were unrelated overstates how rare the combination really is.

Check 8: What is the actual head count?
Percentages hide scale, so the eighth check converts your pool into people. A pool of 0.5 percent sounds tiny, but across a large city it might still be thousands of individuals, while the same 0.5 percent in a small town is a handful. The percentage is only half the picture. The raw count against your real geography is the other half.
Run your filters and look at the 1 in X figure the calculator returns alongside the percentage. A result of 1 in 200 means you would need to consider 200 candidates to find one match on paper. Decide whether that pace fits how you actually meet people. Check 9: Does the pool drop below one percent?
The final check is the summary of all the others. Enter your full list of hard filters into the calculator and read the combined percentage and the score from 1 to 10. If the combined pool sits above a percent or two, your standards are selective but workable.
